Keeping the air cleaner is a top priority, especially here in California. To be compliant with emissions you will need to visit a STAR station. Laws set for governing emissions from automobiles are quite stringent. If you have received your vehicle renewal letter in the mail and stated you need a Smog Certification, Ryan GMW can help! Most vehicles six years and older will require a Smog test every two years.
Passing your Smog Certification doesn’t have to be nerve-racking. Ryan G. Motorworks can assess any problems that need to be corrected to pass with flying colors. A Smog check requires your vehicle to be running at operating temperatures. Some items will be checked including an OBD-2 reading and exhaust levels that are emitted. We've developed a checklist to make your appointment go smoothly and ensure you get the best results.
An illuminated check engine light, malfunctioning indicator lamp, or service engine soon means your auto requires servicing. Often these lights indicate a problem within the emission system. Your vehicle won't pass the Smog assessment of your car has any of these lights present.
Before arriving at your scheduled appointment, be sure that all fluids are filled including oil, coolant, and transmission fluid. It’s an excellent idea to have an oil change performed before your appointment if you haven’t had one done in the last 3,000 miles. If you are in need of an oil change, we would be more than happy to provide this service.
Part of the inspection will require your vehicle to run for a certain amount of time. Without proper fuel levels, an inaccurate reading is possible. *Important Tip* If you put gas in your vehicle before the appointment, make sure your gas cap is secure. A gas gap that isn’t tightened can throw a code which can invalidate the readings.
If your vehicle isn’t capable of running at proper operating temperatures, it will be best to postpone the inspection. Ryan GMW can help if you are experiencing a cooling system problem to make sure your car is operating at it’s best.
Any short in your car's system can give a negative reading. Before you arrive, it is best to address any electrical issues that may be going on with your vehicle. If you are in doubt if your car has sufficient grounds, we can help!
These two components are responsible for running your vehicle. If your battery isn’t capable of holding a charge, or you have a weak alternator, it is best to replace before completing the Smog Certification. We can replace a battery or alternator if your vehicle is experiencing power issues.
At Ryan G. Motorworks we are proud to offer repair services to get you ready for passing the Smog Certification. If for any reason you fail the Smog test, bring your vehicle in for an inspection and we can quickly get your vehicle up to California compliance.
The emissions systems on many vehicles can be complicated, but we are up for the challenge!
